Types of Juicers

A heady cocktail of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, a healthy sweet-tinged mix of spinach, cucumber and carrots, a simple, yet intoxicating drink of squeezed oranges with a few drops of lemon – there's nothing like a glass of fresh juice to rejuvenate the senses and get your engine running! For that perfect mix of flavours that can take one to a whole new world, if only for a few minutes, it indeed is important that one has the right kind of juicer. Before you decide upon a juicer for the kitchen, it will do a lot of good to do little bit of a research on the different types of juicers available. Remember, it's essential that you narrow down on the juicer that will suit your lifestyle the best.

Basically, juicers are of three types namely, Centrifugal, Masticating and Triturating. Here's how each of them work:

Centrifugal Juicers:

Centrifugal juicers are known to render a large volume of juice at very less time. The main parts of a centrifugal juicer are blades that chop the vegetables and fruit and a strainer that extracts the juices from the pulp. The machine has a basket that spins really fast (nearly 60 times per second) to strain the juice through the many tiny openings that are present in its surface. The centrifugal force that's created due to the high-speed spinning of the basket forces the pulp against the walls while the juice is ejected out through the juicer's ejection spout.

Masticating Juicers:

More patient and versatile, these juicers function by chewing up the fruit and vegetables to extract the juice. The result of this is a glass of fiber and enzyme rich juice that also has traces of minerals in it. Masticating Juicers do not stop with just making juice, they can be used for making ice creams, peanut butter, sorbets and baby food as well.

Triturating or Twin Gear Juicers:

The slowest of all, these juicers are well-suited for making juices of root vegetables, wheat-grass, sprouts and greens. Here, the fruit and vegetables are first ground, after which they are pressed for juice. Similar to masticating juicers, twin gear juicers produce juice that's rich in fiber, enzyme and mineral content. A few twin gear juicers come with magnetic and bio-ceramic technology which can slow down the oxidation process so you can save your juice for later.
